COMMISSION for 2014 Young Violist’s Competition

The Northern California Viola Society seeks new, original, unpublished, unperformed 3-minute work for solo viola by Northern California-based composers of any age and genre as the compulsory piece during the final round of the 2014 Young Violist’s Competition.
COMPOSERS MUST RESIDE WITHIN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
WORKS MUST BE FOR SOLO VIOLA (NO PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT)
WORKS MUST BE APPROXIMATELY 3 MINUTES IN LENGTH
SUBMISSION:

Winning composer prizes includes: 
* Recordings of six to eight premiere performances by competition finalists* Additional live performance during ViolaMania in Fall 2014,
* Submission by the NCVS to the American Viola Society Online Library 
for publication consideration* A feature article on the NCVS website
The Winning Composer will be announced in late January. 2014 YVC Competition finals held on March 2, 2014 in San Francisco. Composer attendance requested.

2013 Winners!

Congratulations to the winners of the 2013 NCVS Young Violists Competition, held March 3rd 2013 at the SF Community Music Center. We had 12 initial applicants, 6 finalists, a new work by violist and composer Kurt Rohde, and the winners were:

We were also proud to present Susan Bates, teacher of two of our finalists this year - and of countless other violists who have developed their skills in the Bay Area through the years - with the 2013 Tom Heimberg Viola Advocate Award, recognizing her tireless dedication to advancing the Viola and its players throughout the region and beyond.

Announcing the 2013 NCVS YVC Finalists

We are thrilled to announce our 6 Finalists scheduled to perform in the 2013 Northern California Viola Society Young Violists Competition on March 3rd, 2013!

In alphabetical order, they are:

Congratulations to you all! 

Please join us for the Final Round on March 3rd from 4-6pm at Community Music Center, 544 Capp St. in San Francisco - FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Each Finalist will perform their first-round repertoire (2 movements of solo Bach and one movement from the standard recital repertoire) PLUS a brand new work for solo viola commissioned specifically for this competition by the NCVS from award-winning composer and violist, Kurt Rohde.
